Outsourcing Managers Need To Benchmark Data Centre Opportunities – New Report

Posted on: 03 Mar 2008

London, 3 March 2008 A new report from consulting firm BroadGroup reveals the processes that outsourcing managers need to take, to enable them to benchmark the right data centre opportunity and ensure the facilities selected are fully aligned with their business requirements. The report, Outsourcing Frameworks: sourcing the right solution, presents an intricate step by step structured sourcing framework for IT operations in any business or government organisation, and defines the approach from the experienced perspective of managers who have already undertaken the process. Distinguishing between facilities, and IT infrastructure management, which are often confused, the sourcing framework details the processes in which sourcing teams must engage, to arrive at a decision that is aligned to their original goals. This includes sourcing analysis, model assessment, establishing a base line plan, technical specification and operational costs. A useful comparison of in-sourced versus outsourced costs and data centre construction costs is also provided. The report offers case studies based on the specific data centre requirements of a large multinational corporation, a retail outlet and a government department. The report demonstrates the value that sourcing teams can and need to add to the process of making a Data Centre outsourcing decision, commented Steve Wallage, managing director at BroadGroup Consulting. Our research feedback suggests that IT managers require a very clear pathway that alerts them to the pitfalls they may encounter in selecting data centres. They also wish to understand environmental considerations given the Green momentum. This report provides a valuable framework integrating all these factors. Analysing the information collected by managers in their initial market scan, is supported by another detailed framework, termed the internal readiness assessment model , which offers an evaluation process and a case study for each of data centre services and facilities management scenario. External readiness models complement the internal processes identified, and underline the quality approach of the frameworks. A final framework for the assessment of sourcing options, sustains the intensive nature of managers undertaking this process, and provides practical models together with a risk assessment strategy. Having completed these rigorous processes, the final stage requires managers to engage in rounds of negotiations with the data centres identified in the framework conclusions. Again, a step by step guide is to the procurement process is provided and the report details how to enter into direct negotiations to procure Data Centre services, or engage with the broader market through an RFI/PFI process with examples of the commercial models available. The report is available from BroadGroup at
